..."We found this gem of a hotel after spending a night in a nearby one which turned out to be sub standard. We hadn't pre booked, and just walked in off the street to check out their rooms. The rooms are (marginally) more expensive than some of the other hotels in the area - $30 a night for a normal room with a small window, and $35 for the top of the range. Both styles of room have a seperate shower cubicle in the bathroom - unlike other hotels that have the typical asian hose and nozzle causing you to flood the bathroom avery time you use it. While you can find accomodation in the area from US $15 per night, you get what you pay for - often dirty and musty smelling, reeking of cigarette smoke, and a million flights of stairs to climb. The previous hotel was slugging us $25 a night for a tiny room, crap bathroom, and very basic breakfast. For an extra $5 a night the Hong Thien Loc was a world of difference. And it has an elevator !
Location is excellent - facing onto one of the main roads in the tourist District 1, lots of bars and restaurants in the area, and a 5 min walk to the markets. The motorbike taxis are ever present at the front, and Vinasun taxis (probably the best company in Saigon) have a staff member at the front of the hotel who will radio a taxi for you which will arrive in seconds. We stayed in rooms at the rear of the hotel, which may have been a bit quieter than those facing the main road, but bear in mind that in Saigon you can never fully escape the traffic sounds and horn honking - just pack foam earplugs and problem solved.
Breakfast consisted of both hot and cold dishes, eggs, omlettes, ham, cereal, fruits, and bread. Drinks are tea and coffee, and fruit juices. Breakfast certainly wasn't a wide spread - we'd had better in other hotels but it was far above the standard of most - the previous hotel only offered bread and jam and a banana !
The staff were the most helpful we'd had in Vietnam. I read one post on the hotel from someone else who had had a negative experience with staff - ours was the total opposite. They couldn't do enough. There were always 2 or 3 girls at reception (who spoke excellent English), and 1 or 2 door staff / porters. The staff were always friendly, and went out of their way to help. One big plus was the lack of a tour desk - every other hotel we stayed in had one in your face, with staff usually trying to push tours down your throat before you've even checked in. The Hong Thien Loc does offer the tour service - just a matter of asking. We booked a private vehicle for a trip through them which turned out excellent - a new car and english speaking driver. And they are a 2 min walk from the excellent Sinbahlo tour company who are in the laneway behind the hotel -great tours and staff as well.
There are 3 internet PC's in the foyer that are free of charge to guests - pretty new compared with other grotty ones in some hotels. They don't have a digital camera card reader, so make sure you bring one if you want to upload photo's (or buy one in the markets for $4 USD.
I'll be back in Vietnam mid year with family, and will not bother to look anywhere else for accomodation - the Hong Thien Loc has everything we need."

"On arriving in hcmc we were booked into another hotel in a laneway it was the most awful hotel ,it didn't have a shower recess the shower was over the toilet, so if you wanted to go to the toilet & already had showered you would have to wipe the toilet down to use it, & it was dirty. Next morning I found this hotel HONG THIEN LOC & it was such a lovely hotel from the staff on the front desk to the porters at the front door. Lovely & clean 2 very comfortable beds & most of the staff speak english & will help you with any questions you may have.I would recommend this hotel if you are visiting HO CHI MINH CITY I will be staying there again next year when we visit vietnam again."
